Acne is a relatively common skin infection that is generally caused due to changes in our skin structure. Some of the common myths circulating about acne are:

• My acne will go away by itself. I dont have to get it treated.

- Truth: While your acne may eventually go away on its own, it will take a much longer time and it can reappear shortly. Also, leaving acne untreated is known to be one of the main causes of acne scarring, which could have otherwise been avoided.

• Acne is caused due to the sexual activities of the individual.

- Truth: This isnt true. However, acne may sometimes be caused by hormonal changes that result in an increase in hormonal activity.

• Dry skin causes acne.

- Truth: Acne is not caused by dirty skin, even though you may try to force yourself to believe that your skin is dirty. Scrubbing isnt recommended, as it will further aggravate the skin. You should really wash the area of your skin affected by acne gently and pat it dry – this should be done around twice a day.

• Stress causes acne.

- Truth: There is no known scientific evidence that has proven that acne is caused due to stress. However, as a general advice it is always best to avoid stressful situations and activities.

• Some foods can cause acne.

- Truth: Numerous clinical trials have proven that no food (including chocolate) is a cause for acne. However, certain foods can worsen the acne in people who are already suffering from acne.

• Exposure to sunlight will cause the acne to reduce.

- Truth: Exposure to direct sunlight for long periods isnt recommended and it has not been proven to cause a reduction in acne.

• Only teenagers are affected by acne, so it must be something else.

- Truth: People of all ages can be affected by acne. Babies get it and so do old people!

• Squeezing or picking your pimple is the easiest way to get rid of it.

- Truth: Its actually the easiest way to get permanent scars. Picking or squeezing your pimples isnt recommended under any circumstances.

• Acne isnt affected by cosmetics.

- Truth: Most cosmetics are known to have adverse reactions with acne. The only cosmetics that are safe for those suffering from acne are labeled as non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic.
