Many acne sufferers feel that exercising exacerbates their condition and try to avoid it as a result. This is a mistake, as moderate exercise is important for general health and can relieve stress, both of which can only do good in the fight against acne.
If you find that exercising aggravates your acne, take a step back and examine your routine. What, where, how? Chances are that exercise-related acne is caused by what you put on your body rather than what you do with it.
Things to Watch Out For
Make-up – Avoid wearing make-up when exercising, since even non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) products can indeed clog pores when worn during exercise due to increased perspiration. If you must wear make-up, wash it off as soon as possible after your workout.
Sunscreen – Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to the suns rays promotes comedones (clogged pores). Always wear sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (30+) against both UVA and UVB and is oil-free. As with make-up, wash thoroughly when youre done.
Clothing – Avoid wearing synthetic materials like nylon and lycra, as these non-breathable materials can trap heat and moisture against your skin, providing a fertile breeding ground for bacteria. Wear loose-fitting clothes made from natural materials like cotton which allow your skin to breathe.
Equipment – Always keep your equipment clean and dry. You can avoid friction-related breakouts by ensuring your equipment fits snugly, but isnt too tight. It can often help to place a piece of clean breathable material, such as cotton, between you and your equipment.
Sweat – Dont hang around in your wet, sweaty clothes. Shower and change into a set of fresh, clean clothes as soon as youre finished exercising. If showering isnt an option, at least change your clothes and dry yourself off with a towel. Always use a clean towel for your face, blotting instead of wiping, as this can further block your pores.
Showering – Shower as soon as possible, using a medicated exfoliant if you wish. Always be gentle, since scrubbing harder wont make you any cleaner, but it will irritate your skin and promote more legions to form. Keep a few medicated pads with you for those times when you cant shower straight away.
